How to make ruffle scrunchies step by step

How to make ruffle scrunchies step by step | diy.ac

Have you got any cotton scraps at home? If so –  it’s a good opportunity to use them. Cut out 1 rectangle from a colorful fabric, spend only 15 minutes and create your own ruffle scrunchie – a fun everyday hairaccessory, which can be also a great handmade gift.

Recently, I was making these usual scrunchies and these tulle ones with pom poms inside, but I’ve tried something new and now the ruffle scrunchies are my favourite.

For one scrunchie you will need:

  • a piece of fabric  60 x 15 cm (24 x 6 inches)
  • an elastic – 18 cm (7 inches)
  • 2 safety pins
  • sewing machine and basic sewing tools

Materials: you can use many types of fabric, but the fabric shouldn’t be too thick. For beginners thin cotton will be the best.

STEP 1

Cut out a piece of colourful fabric.

STEP 2

Place the fabric inside out and iron over one of the short ends by 2 cm (1 inch) on the wrong side.

STEP 3

Fold the fabric in half lengthwise with right sides together.

Sew along the long edge using a 1 cm (3/8 inch) seam allowance – you should have a tube with two open ends.

STEP 4

Turn your tube right side out.

You need to iron your fabric tube.

STEP 5

Then, in the along center of the tube you have to make a tunnel through which you tread the elastic. On the right side of the fabric make two parallel seams. Sew through the two layers of the fabric.

Don’t sew to the end of your tube! On the folded side leave 1 cm (1/2 inch) do not stitch.

Distance between the seams should be 1,5 cm (1/2 inch).

STEP 6

Using a safety pin, attach one end of the elastic to the scrap of fabric. Place another safety pin on the second end of the elastic. Attach a safety pin to the fabric in order to protect the elastic from dropping into the tunnel.

Tread the elastic through the tunnel between 2 stitches. Start from the folded end.

Tie the two ends of elastic up together with a double knot or sew both ends of the elastic together.

Pull the elastic around so the knot is hidden.

STEP 7

Now, all you need to do is closing up the gap. Tuck the unfolded end of your tube inside the folded one and pin.

Sew near to the edge to finish your scrunchie.

Your scrunchie is ready to wear.
