How to sew tulle scrunchies step by step

Summer is coming up so I’ve prepared something just for the summer – some colorful and fun scrunchies. It can be a great handmade gift for girls which you can make in your own way – use your creativity and put not only the pom poms into your scrunchies, but also some beads, sequins, ribbons, fabric scraps… or change the tulle for another transparent fabric.
Soft tulle is difficult to sew, but – don’t worry – in this project your stitch doesn’t have to be perfect. If you wrinkle your tulle tube, the imperfections won’t be visible.
If you are interested in sewing casual scrunchies from colorful cotton look at this step by step tutorial. However, if you are more into something new, try ruffle scrunchies. Here is the tutorial – how to make ruffle scrunchies step by step.
For one scrunchie you will need:
- a sewing machine and basic sewing tools
- a piece of soft tulle 45 x 10 cm (18 x 4 inches)
- an elastic – 18 cm (7 inches)
- 2 safety pins
- pom poms (as many as you want)
To sew tulle scrunchies follow this step by step instruction:
STEP 1
Cut out a piece of soft tulle 45 x 10 cm (18 x 4 inches).
STEP 2
Fold the fabric in half lengthwise with right sides together. Sew along the long edge using a 1 cm (3/8 inch) seam allowance – you should have a tube with two open ends.
Don’t forget to backstitch at the beginning and at the end of all your stitching! Backstitching means securing the beginning and end of a machine stitched seam, in order to not damaging the seam. Start with sewing forward three stitches. Then go back to the beginning and now sew forward to the end of the seam. When you get to the end of the seam, go back for about three stitches and then go forward three stitches again.
Now turn your tube right side out.
You can (but it is not necessary) iron your tulle tube, but remember to iron at the lowest temperature.
STEP 3
Using a safety pin, attach one end of the elastic to the scrap of fabric (attach a safety pin to the fabric in order to protect the elastic from dropping into the tube). Place another safety pin on the second end of the elastic and thread it through the tube.
Tie the two ends of elastic up together with a double knot or sew both ends of the elastic together.
Pull the elastic around so the knot is hidden. Make sure the seam of your tube is running all along the outside edge.
STEP 4
Put the pom poms into your tube. Now all you need to do is closing up the gap. Tuck the one end of your tube inside the second one and sew near to the edge to close up the tube and finish your scrunchie.
Don’t forget to backstitch at the beginning and at the end of the seam.
Now evenly distribute the pom poms inside your tube.
Done! Your scrunchie is ready to wear.
Happy sewing!
